Setting up this blog was definitely an adventure… I decided to try creating my website on my own about a week before we would be doing it in class, so I had to figure some things out myself. I followed the directions Bonnie had left for us students on D2L, which helped tremendously. The most helpful part to setting up my blog, though, would have to be the checklist on the word press website. I clicked the item I wanted to work on, such as site icon, and it led me to where I could change the photo, easy as that. The setting up of major things, such as profile picture, web address, site icon, etc. went well, but after that I still wanted to make the site more of my own. I found the customize button on the left side of my screen on the profile tool bar, and began creating. I changed the color of the background of my site, the header picture, added widgets, and several other items under the customize tool bar. The entire process went pretty smooth as I figured things out along the way.
Major issue:
One problem I had was publishing my newly customized blog. After I had made everything my own, I hit the publish button, but it was taking forever to load (try 15 hours). So, I decided to exit the page and come back to it. When I opened the page again, and logged into my Word Press account, everything I had previously customized was gone. I was back at a white, blank page again. This happened several times, at my house, at school, at a coffee shop in downtown Rochester… I could not figure it out. But then I tried customizing one thing on my blog, for example the background color, and then hit publish, and it published right away. I then went to the next item, header picture. I chose the image I wanted and hit publish, and it published right away again. All I had to do was publish every item separately, and then it all published on my site.
Thinking:
I definitely had to put a lot of skilled thinking into uploading my blog website. I had to think through certain road blocks, and overcome the challenges set before me. I also had to think organizationally, which I tend to do in my daily life. I love everything to be perfectly placed and organized, so I used the same ideal for my blog set up (especially in the customizing). Overall, it was a useful experience, and it was actually kind of fun. 🙂
